Overlap

The Term “user generated content” is so unattractive to me. I don’t know why but I think using the term social networking lead s to the same meaning. I believe that any website that offers that opportunity for consumers to share their knowledge and familiarity with a product or experience could just be called “social networking.” I think using to many terms is misleading sometimes.
The “UCG”, or what I would like to call social networking, allows all users the choice of becoming participants rather than just viewers or audience. It also provides knowledge experts for audience as well not only participants.
However, the “UCG” might cause some issues of incredibility and biased information that might be sometimes useless for participants. This could also lead to content overlap or duplicity.

If you are only considering websites in your definition then forgive what I am about to write.

Because one large part of UGC is what is made not on a website but what perhaps a programmer makes in his or her free time. For example for the game World of Warcraft or WoW many people create applications to be interfaced with WoW but it isn't about networking at all. Some of these apps may allow users of the game to connect but many of them just allow for better game playing efficiency or better information tracking. So while it is true that some UGC can proliferate social networking I don't believe that the two terms can be interchanged.

i agree with sarah that there are differences between the merge of terms-social networking and UGC.. but I also agree, that creating this separate group -UGC- is stupid. I think that so much out on the internet can be incorporated or constitute as UGC that it can cause for conflicting understanding of what UGC may be.
